Akron RubberDucks News Release

Bad, Bad Bowie...Bowie got the better of the Aeros in the series opener last night, claiming a 13-11 slugfest before 2,478 fans at Canal Park. The 13 runs and 21 hits for the Baysox were season-highs for an Aeros opponent, the 10 runs surrendered by starter Bobby Livingston marked a season-high for an Akron pitcher (and was just one run shy of tying the franchise record), and Bowie went a whopping 13-24 with runners in scoring position to set another season-high for an Aeros opponent. The Baysox hung five runs on the board in the top of the first and led 10-4 midway through the contest before the Aeros rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fifth and four in the seventh, pulling within a run at 12-11 in the bottom of the eighth before falling short.

Beyond the Box Score...Akron put up its biggest offensive effort in over a month last night with 11 runs on 18 hits, and did it all without the All-Star triumvirate of 1B Beau Mills, C Carlos Santana and LF Nick Weglarz in the lineup. All three, along with pitchers Jeanmar Gomez and Carlton Smith, missed a connecting flight returning from Trenton yesterday morning and although they made it to the ballpark in time for the game were without their uniforms, spikes, gloves, batting helmets...everything. Despite that, Akron's 18 hits were one shy of their largest output of the season, and the six hits in the bottom of the seventh tied a season-high for most hits in an inning.

Goedert Gets It Going...The big star for the Aeros yesterday was DH Jared Goedert, who finished 3-4 with a home run and six RBI, driving in a run in four of his five plate appearances. The six steaks tied a career-high for the Kansas State product (he also had six May 25th, 2007 for Lake County), and were the most by an Aero since Wes Hodges collected seven April 15th of last season against Binghamton. Goedert suffered through a tough start which included a trip to the disabled list less than a week into the season and was hitting just .176 on June 16th. In his last 26 games however, the native of Concordia, KS is hitting .356 (31-87) with eight doubles and nine multi-hit games, boosting his average a whopping 69 points to .245 entering play tonight.

Zach Attack...RHP Zach Putnam was impressive out of the bullpen for Akron last night, delivering 2.1 scoreless innings and helping the Aeros mount their rally. The 2008 draftee out of the University of Michigan is in his first stint as reliever and has kept opponents scoreless in 11 of his 18 outings thus far. He has 28 strikeouts in 30.2 innings pitched.

Roster Moves...The Aeros regained the services of All-Stars Carlos Santana and Nick Weglarz today as both were activated from the temporary inactive list but lost Jerad Head to the disabled list with a right shoulder sublux. Santana and Weglarz were on the inactive list because of their participation in the Futures Game, while Head was hurt diving for a ball in left field last night. Did You Know...The Aeros have a 5.13 team ERA in the past 14 games. The led the league with a 3.15 mark on July 2nd.
