Chesapeake Baysox News Release

AKRON, Oh. - The Baysox mounted a rally to tie the game in the seventh inning, but a two-run blast by Carlos Santana put Akron ahead for good as they went on to defeat Bowie 6-4. Right-hander John Mariotti took the loss in his first relief appearance for the Baysox this season, allowing three earned runs in 3.0 innings. The loss drops them back to 5.0 games behind the Aeros for the Southern Division lead.

The Aeros struck for three runs in the first inning due to some sloppy defense by the Baysox. Jose Constanza led off the inning with a single, advancing to second when Matt McBride reached on an error by second baseman Miguel Abreu. Nick Weglarz followed with a ground ball to Eric Crozier at first, but a throwing error loaded the bases with nobody out. Liz followed with a wild pitch to bring home the first run of the game for Akron. Liz got Santana to go down swinging, but Beau Mills struck for a two-run double to put Akron ahead 3-0.

The Baysox tallied a single run in the top of the second against Akron lefty Ryan Edell. Right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion reached on a bunt single to start the inning, and advanced to third one batter later on a single by left fielder Dave Krynzel. After catcher Guillermo Rodriguez popped out for the second out of the inning, center fielder Danny Figueroa came through with a two-out hit to put the Baysox on the board.

The two teams exchanged single runs in the sixth inning. Left fielder Jonathan Tucker led off the top of the inning with a double and later scored on an RBI single by Crozier. Akron answered back in the bottom of the inning against Mariotti, as Cristo Arnal laced an RBI single to make the score 4-2.

Poor defense by Akron allowed the Baysox to tie the game at four in the seventh inning. Rodriguez and Figueroa led off the inning with consecutive singles to put runners on first and second. Designated hitter Joe Nowicki looked to sacrifice the runners over with a bunt, but a wild throw by Jared Goedert allowed Rodriguez to come across and cut the Aeros lead to one. Figueroa advanced to third on the play, while Nowicki cruised into second with nobody out. Steven Wright came on to replace Edell, and Tucker followed with an RBI groundout to score Figueroa and tie the game at four. With the go-ahead run at third and one out, Wright settled down and retired shortstop Robert Valido and Crozier to keep the game even.

Akron answered right back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Nick Weglarz drew a one-out walk off Mariotti, setting the table for Carlos Santana. The Aeros All-Star catcher made the Baysox pay, driving a two-run homer over the wall in center to give Akron a 6-4 lead.

The lead was too much to overcome as Wright shut out the Baysox over the final two innings to earn his seventh win of the season. The win snapped a six-game losing streak, as Erie and Reading join the Baysox in a four-team race for the division crown.

Tomorrow, right-hander Ryohei Tanaka (0-0, 0.39 ERA) takes the mound for the Baysox against Akron RHP Jeanmar Gomez (6-3, 3.21). Game time is set for 7:05 at Canal Park in Akron.
