Connecticut Defenders News Release
MANCHESTER, NH- Connecticut and New Hampshire embarked on a wild rollercoaster ride in game two of their series that included long innings, great plays, runs and even an ejection. In the end, it was the Defenders (54-37) holding onto a 9-8 win Friday night at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium.
Adam Witter's pinch hit RBI single to drive in RF-Eddy Martinez-Esteve in the sixth inning proved to be crucial as Connecticut fought off a power surging New Hampshire squad to even the series at one game apiece.
New Hampshire took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as East Lyme native Todd Donovan leadoff with a single than moved to third on a catcher's interference before swiping third base and scoring on a double play ball.
Connecticut started their barrage of runs in the third. The Defenders loaded the bases for CF-Mike McBryde in the third, than sent a slow chopper to third in which 3B-Scott Campbell fired home to get LF-Mike Mooney who slid in safely and C-Jackson Williams followed as the ball skipped past C-Brian Jeroloman. With the infield drawn in, SS-Brandon Crawford sent a two RBI broken bat flare to left to give CT a 4-1 advantage.
In the fourth, Connecticut got two aboard with a 3B-Ramon Castro leadoff single and DH-Sharlon Schoop got hit by a pitch. Mooney then belted a three run homer (5) over the left centerfield wall, his first in exactly one month. Williams followed with a double and scored on a double play to give the Defenders an 8-1 lead.
The Fisher Cats would put together a masterful sixth inning that saw twelve batters come to the plate and deliver six hits, score seven runs and one error to trim the lead to just one when it was all said and done.
Defenders' starter RHP-Tim Alderson (6-1) allowed five runs, four earned off of eight hits, walked two and struck out a pair while earning his sixth win of the season. Fisher Cat's starter LHP-Luis Perez (6-7) suffered the loss in one of his worst outings of the season lasting just three innings, allowing eight runs, six earned off of seven hits, walked one and fanned three.
Connecticut's LHP-Jesse English (6-5) will take the hill in game three tomorrow against New Hampshire's RHP-Marty McLeary (1-2) at 7:05pm from MerchantsAuto.com Stadium.
