Trenton Comes From Behind to Top Portland

(Trenton, NJ)- Trenton erupted for six runs in the sixth inning to come-from-behind to top Portland 9-6 on Thursday night from Waterfront Park. Trenton scored nine unanswered runs in the game.

Down 6-0, Trenton started the come back trail with a three-run third inning. After a walk by Third baseman Marcos Vechionacci, Center fielder Ausin Krum singled Vechionacci to second base. Second baseman Reegie Corona followed with a two-run double to cut the Portland lead to 6-2. With two outs in the inning, Catcher Jesus Montero plated Corona with an RBI single to make it 6-3.

Trenton (45-45) scored six runs in the sixth inning to take a 9-6 lead. The six runs tied a season-high for the Thunder in an inning. Trenton also tied a season-high with seven hits in an inning. First baseman Chris Malec singled and moved to third base on a one-out RBI double Right fielder Edwar Gonzalez. Vechionacci then singled home Malec for the first run of the inning. Vechionacci finished the game 2 x 3 with two runs and an RBI. After a fly out by Krum, five consecutive Thunder players reached with two outs. Corona connected on his second two-run double to tie the game at 6-6. With Corona on second base, Shortstop Eduardo Nunez reached base on an infield single. Corona was able to score all the way from second base with the go-ahead run to give the Thunder their first lead of the night at 7-6. The lead increased to 8-6 on an RBI triple by Designated Hitter Jorge Vazquez. The triple was his first of the season. Montero capped off the scoring with an RBI single. 10 Thunder players batted in the inning. Corona finished the game 2 x 4 with two runs, two doubles, and a season-high four RBI.

Trenton's bullpen combined to toss 6 1/3 shutout innings. Trenton's bullpen has allowed only three runs in its last 53 1/3 innings, which has covered the last 12 games. Thunder Reliever Kevin Whelan (4-0) picked up the win with two perfect innings. He struck out three. Thunder Reliever Jose Valdez notched his sixth save of the season. Portland Reliever Andrew Dobies (2-2) allowed four hits and three runs in 2/3 inning to take the loss. Trenton Starting Pitcher Jeremy Bleich ended up receiving a no-decision. He yielded three hits and six runs in 2 2/3 innings. Portland Starting Pitcher Felix Doubront also received a no-decision. He gave up five hits and three runs in four innings.

The Thunder play the second game of a four-game series against the Portland Sea Dogs (Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox) on Friday night. RHP Ryan Pope (3-6, 5.33) will start for Trenton against Portland RHP Junichi Tazawa (8-5, 2.79). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
