New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- Todd Donovan broke up a no-hitter in the sixth inning with an infield single and, following another infield single in the eighth inning, came around to score the game-winning run on David Cooper's sacrifice fly, giving the New Hampshire Fisher Cats a 1-0 victory over the Connecticut Defenders on Thursday night before a crowd of 5,821 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.
Shaun Marcum and Adrian Martin combined on a five-hit shutout for New Hampshire (42-49), with Martin (2-1) yielding just two hits in 4.1 innings to earn a win in his second straight appearance. The right-hander fanned two and worked around two hit two batters, reducing his July ERA to 0.58 (15.1 IP-1 ER) in four appearances.
Marcum was effective in a Major League injury rehabilitation appearance. The Toronto right-hander held Connecticut (53-38) scoreless on three hits and two walks in 4.2 innings, fanning four and leaving with the game tied 0-0.
The Fisher Cats snapped that scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the eighth against Waldis Joaquin when Donovan (2-for-4, R) led off by beating out an infield hit. Darin Mastroianni (1-for-3, BB, 2 SB) executed a perfect hit-and-run single, advancing Donovan to third. Cooper (0-for-3, SF, RBI) greeted left-hander Matt Yourkin with a deep sac fly to center, plating Donovan with the night's lone run.
Joaquin (3-5) allowed one run on three hits in two innings to suffer the loss. The righty notched two strikeouts and walked a batter.
Defenders' starter Madison Bumgarner struggled with his command, walking four and hitting a batter, but he held the Fisher Cats to only a Donovan sixth-inning infield single over 5.1 shutout innings of work.
On Friday night, New Hampshire left-hander Luis Perez (6-6, 3.18) takes the mound against Connecticut right-hander Tim Alderson (5-1, 2.91) in the second game of the four-game series at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. The first 2,000 fans in attendance on Friday night will receive free Travis Snider Bobbleheads, courtesy of Irving Oil. For tickets, visit www.nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005.
