Connecticut Defenders News Release
MANCHESTER, NH- It was almost two months since New Hampshire and Connecticut met last but you couldn't tell as they played another tight ballgame. The Fisher Cats were able to pull a little harder in Thursday's tug-o-war game as they defeated the Defenders 1-0 at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium.
New Hampshire took advantage of runners in scoring position in the eighth inning when 1B-David Cooper matched up against LHP-Matt Yourkin, sent a deep fly ball to right centerfield for a sac fly that scored LF-Todd Donovan for the game winner.
From the first pitch to the last, pitching was the name of the game. Fresh off his non-appearance in the XM Futures Game LHP-Madison Bumgarner looked a bit rusty out of the gate but only because he threw more pitches than often. Bumgarner overall was great allowing just one hit over 5.1 scoreless innings, walking a season high four and fanned three in the no decision.
The Fisher Cats were graced with a major league rehab by RHP-Shaun Marcum who is recovering from Tommy John surgery. Marcum in just his third start, first in Double-A fired 4.2 scoreless innings of work on a strict pitch count allowing just three hits, walked two and struck out four.
Connecticut would have their best opportunities in the third and fourth innings with runners in scoring position but solid pitching squandered them.
Defenders' reliever RHP-Waldis Joaquin (3-5) suffered the loss allowing just the one earned run off of three hits in two innings of work while walking one and striking out a pair. Fisher Cats reliever RHP-Adrian Martin (2-1) hurled an impressive 4.1 scoreless innings scattering two hits in the win.
Game two will feature another pitcher's matchup as Defenders RHP-Tim Alderson (5-1) goes head to head with New Hampshire's LHP-Luis Perez (6-6). First pitch is slated for 7:05pm from MerchantsAuto.com Stadium.
