ALTOONA, PA - The Altoona Curve came off of the Eastern League All-Star break hitting on all cylinders defeating the Harrisburg Senators (AA-Washington Nationals) 7-1 in the first game of a four game series Thursday night at Blair County Ballpark.
Pirates No. 1 prospect Pedro Alvarez blasted his fifth Double-A home run of the season in the fifth inning off of Senators starter Luis Atilano (4-6). Alvarez finished the night 3-for-5 with a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored.
Curve starter Yoslan Herrera (6-0) was spectacular tossing a season best 7.0 innings allowing no runs on seven hits with five strikeouts to remain undefeated in the 2009 season.
The other eight Curve starters all recorded hits in support of Herrera. Jim Negrych reached base four times in a 3-for-4 effort, his 24th multi hit game of the season to lead Altoona. CF Gorkys Hernandez also had three hits going 3-for-5 with a double.
The Curve (34-58) are now a perfect 4-0 against Harrisburg (38-52) this season and will look to make it five Friday night as the two teams meet up for the second game of the four game series. Friday's probable starters are right hander Mike Crotta (4-4, 4.61) for the Curve and southpaw Cory VanAllan (2-4, 5.77) for Harrisburg. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Friday night at BCB with radio coverage starting at 6:35 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network.
Friday will be Family Faith Night presented by the Altoona/Johnstown Diocese. All are welcome for Mass as well as a worship rally beginning at 3:00 p.m. in the concourse of Blair County Ballpark. The first 2,000 fans in attendance for Friday's game will also receive St. Francis bobbleheads also courtesy of the Altoona/Johnstown Diocese.
