Corpus Christi, TX - The Arkansas Travelers fell to 1-11 over their last 12 games with an 8-4 loss to the Corpus Christi Hooks on Tuesday night at Whataburger Field.
The Hooks jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning thanks to two home runs. CF Teoscar Hernandez launched a solo home run to left, and after an error prolonged the inning, lefty RF Jon Kemmer belted an opposite field three-run homerun into the jet stream to make it 4-0.
The closest Arkansas came to tying the game was after LF Ruben Sosa took advantage of the strong winds and lined a three-run home run to left in the fourth to cut its deficit to 5-4.
Corpus Christi immediately extended its lead with runs with two in the bottom of the fourth and one in the fifth to open up the 8-4 advantage.
Travs starter RHP Chris Ellis (L, 5-3) worked four-plus innings and allowed all eight runs, but only three of them were earned. Ellis walked one with five strikeouts.
RHP Austin Wood pitched three scoreless innings after Ellis and RHP Austin Adams pitched a 1-2-3 eighth with two strikeouts for the Travs.
Sosa finished 2-for-4 with the home run, two runs scored, three RBIs and a stolen base. Tuesday was Sosa's first game off the Disabled List since August 9th.
Hooks DH A.J. Reed finished 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, and is 22-for-43 over his 11-game hitting streak.
With the loss, Arkansas dropped to two games behind the Springfield Cardinals in the Texas League North second half standings.
The Travs and Hooks will play the middle game of the three-game series on Wednesday night at Whataburger Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
