Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - 2B Bruce Caldwell worked an RBI bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting the Springfield Cardinals to the 4-3 win against the Midland RockHounds before 4,680 fans at Hammons Field on Tuesday night. The 1st-place Cardinals have won each of their last five home games, three of which have been in walk-off fashion.
The RockHounds (34-17, 69-52) came out swinging with a pair of runs in the top of the first against RHP Andrew Morales. With one away, 2B Colin Walsh reached base on a walk, before moving to third one out later on a single by LF Josh Whitaker. With two on and two down, SS Chad Pinder drove a two-run double to right-center field, lifting the Hounds into the early 2-0 lead.
The Cardinals (26-25, 56-65) cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the second against RHP Parker Frazier. With one down, C Michael Ohlman and RF David Washington reached on consecutive singles to put men at the corners. 3B Patrick Wisdom then skied an RBI sacrifice fly to right-center field, scoring Ohlman from third base to bring the Cardinals within one run, 2-1.
The Cardinals completed the comeback with a two-out rally in the bottom of the third. Following a fly out and a groundout, CF Charlie Tilson extended the inning with a two-out base hit. Tilson raced around to third on a sharp single by SS Aledmys Diaz, the Texas League Player of the Week, putting runners at the corners. 2B Bruce Caldwell then came through with an RBI single ripped back up the middle, bringing in Tilson from third for the 2-2 tie.
Springfield struck again in the bottom of the fourth to tilt the lead in their direction. Ohlman once again started the charge with a single to begin the inning. After moving to second on a wild pitch, he then took third on a groundout to first base. Wisdom brought in Ohlman for his second RBI of the night with a rocket of a single to left field, lifting the Cardinals ahead, 3-2.
The RockHounds, though, battled it back even in the top of the fifth inning. Walsh worked another walk to start the stanza, before swiping his way to second base. After staying put on a fly out, Walsh took third on a groundout before darting home on an RBI single from Pinder, squaring the score at 3-3.
Springfield RHP Silfredo Garcia kept the tie intact through two scoreless relief innings, before LHP Ryan Sherriff posted a scoreless eighth. RHP Kurt Heyer (W, 6-0) then followed with a scoreless top of the ninth, sending the game into the bottom of the ninth still knotted at 3-3.
Facing RHP Brendan McCurry (L, 0-1), Wisdom and LF Nick Martini worked consecutive walks to start the bottom of the ninth. Both runners moved up ninety feet on a sacrifice bunt from DH Mike O'Neill, before Midland intentionally walked Tilson to load the bases with one away. McCurry retired Diaz with a strikeout, but Caldwell won a nine-pitch battle to draw the game-winning RBI walk, forcing Wisdom home from third and catapulting the Cardinals to the 4-3 walk-off win.
