Herrera Blanks Naturals in Opener as San Antonio Stays Hot

August 18, 2015 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release

A complete-game shutout by Ronald Herrera lifted San Antonio to a 3-0 win over Northwest Arkansas Tuesday night before 4,263 at Wolff Stadium.

Yeison Asencio continued his torrid August Tuesday, beginning in the first, when his two-out RBI single gave the Missions a 1-0 lead on starter Kyle Zimmer (1-3).

In the bottom of the third, after a two-out error by third baseman Hunter Dozier kept the inning alive, Asencio followed by ripping a two-run double down the left-field line to push the San Antonio lead to 3-0.

Asencio, who finished the game 2-for-4, is hitting .467 (28-for-60) with 16 RBI this month.

The three early runs turned out to be more than enough for Herrera, who for the second straight start against the Naturals was sensational. On August 12 at Northwest Arkansas, Herrera (3-0) allowed just one run on four hits and two walks, while striking out a career-high, tying eight over a then career-high eight innings. Tuesday night, the 20-year-old hurler was even better, allowing just three hits and no walks, while fanning seven over a career-high nine innings.

It was the first complete-game shutout by a San Antonio hurler since Cesar Ramos on June 22, 2007 vs. Midland. The Missions have now tossed consecutive shutouts and have not allowed a run over their last 23 innings (season high is 23.2).

San Antonio (24-27, 55-66) continues its three-game series against Northwest Arkansas (18-32, 58-62) Wednesday with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Casey Kelly (1-7, 3.97) will take the hill for the Missions, while the Naturals counter with southpaw Jonathan Dziedzic (8-6, 3.12).

Notes: Alberth Martinez (1-for-4 with a run scored) extended his career-high (and TL season-high) on-base streak to 33 games. San Antonio has won eight of its last 11 games.
