May 25, 2013 - Frontier League (FL)
Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
The Traverse City Beach Bums scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth and walked off with a 2-1 victory over the Rockford Aviators Saturday night.
Trailing 1-0 heading into the final inning, Sean Gusrang led off with a single. Taylor Wrenn tried to sacrifice him to second, but the bunt was popped in the air and fielded by Ted Obregon who threw to second to force out Gusrang. Marcus Nidiffer stodd in and lifted a ball to right-centerfield that was lost in the lights by Alvaro Ramirez, dropping in for a double, moving Wrenn to third. Pinch-hitter Zach Kometani was intentionally walked to load the bases and set up a double play. The move did not work out, however, as Matt Howard lined a single to left to plate Wrenn and knot the game at 1-1. Ryan Still was the next batter. On an 0-2 count, Still grounded a ball past the pitchers mound towards center. Obregon scrambled to field the ball and step on second for the second out, but his throw to first was late as Nidiffer scored the winning run
The victory went to Nick Capito (1-0) who pitched a perfect ninth. Nick Cicio (0-1) took the loss. Mike Devine was strong for the Beach Bums tossing five innings in relief, allowing three hits and one unearned run. Burny Mitchem tossed three shutout innings to open the game. Rockford starter Seafth Howe was excellent for the Aviators, pitching 6.2 innings of shutout all, striking out 10.
The series wraps up tomorrow with a Family FUNday Sunday. Kids tickets are half price with the purchase of an adult chairback seat, there is a full-team autograph session following the contest and kids can run the bases after the game. Jake Sabol gets the start for Traverse City against Josh Scneider for the Aviators. First pitch is set for 5:05 pm.
