The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, despite a late sixth-inning rally fell 10-5 against the visiting Southern Illinois Miners on Saturday night and ended a season-high four game winning streak.
After a short stint on the disabled list, AJ Nunziato, in his first start at shortstop in the 2013 season went 2-3 with a single, a double and a two runs scored.
The Wild Things put themselves on the board in the bottom of the second as Gus Benusa (3-4) and CJ Beatty (1-4) both brought Jim Vahalik and Nunziato across the plate for the home team's first two runs of the evening.
However, a three-run homerun and a solo shot by the Miners gave them at an 8-2 advantage for the going into the bottom of the sixth.
Down but not out, the Wild Things would begin their rally in the bottom of the sixth frame as AJ Nunziato's double put runners on second and third. With two outs in the sixth, Benusa's clutch double scored catcher Jim Vahalik and Nunziato to make it 8-5.
The Miners added two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth giving them a five-run advantage in the last frame of the game.
