Saturday, May 25 - 6:05 p.m. CT Silver Cross Field - Joliet, IL

Game #8 - Home Game #5 (4-3), (3-1)

Last time out

Florence got on the board in the first inning after Eric Groff crushed a ball to left field for a solo home run. It was the only lead of the night for the Freedom, as Joliet would respond in the third with three runs. Grant DeBruin led off the third with a single and Tyler Goodro followed him to the bases after getting hit by a pitch. Matthew Scruggs would come to the dish and drive in the Slammers' first run of the ballgame on a RBI single. Javan Williams filled the bases after a beautiful bunt down the third base line that would rest inches from the chalk in fair territory. After Nate Wilder popped out to the catcher, Michael Wing drove in two more to make it a 3-1 game on a two RBI single. Florence would get one run back in the sixth, but Joliet would respond in the seventh with three more runs to make it 6-2 Slammers after seven innings. The Freedom made things interesting in the eighth after picking up two runs on a Kyle Maunus throwing error, but Shawn Kale would strike out Byron Wiley, Jacob Tanis and Ryan Skellie consecutively to limit the damage and end the inning. Justin Erasmus would then close things down in the ninth for Joliet.

For Starters...

Brett Zawacki is coming off a solid effort in a loss to Traverse City. He went five innings and gave up two runs as they Slammers ended up falling 6-2. Zawacki struck out five but walked four in the start. The Illinois native brings a history of success in affiliated baseball to the Slammers. The right-hander advanced as high as Double-A in the Cardinals organization. St. Louis made Zawacki their 12th round selection out of LaSalle-Peru Township High School in 2007. Last season was Zawacki's first year in the Frontier League.

A new era...

The Slammers enter the 2013 campaign with an entirely new coaching staff and an almost completely new roster. Manager Mike Breyman enters his first year as the team's skipper while Eric Coleman and Dave Garcia will serve as the team's new pitching and hitting coaches respectively. All three have experience coaching in the Frontier League and Breyman is a former Frontier League Coach of the Year. Coleman has managerial experience in the league with Oakland County. Meanwhile, only six players remain from the 2012 team (Ben Hewett, who played the first part of the year with Joliet, Kyle Maunus, Chase Doremus, Jacob Sanchez, Mike Barsotti and David Christensen). Only Maunus and Hewett remain from the 2011 championship squad.
