
Miners Hit Their Way to Win

Washington, PA - The Miners didn't let the cold weather bother them as they would record 14 hits and score ten runs to defeat the Washington Wild Things 10-5 to improve to 4-4 on the regular season. Miners starting pitcher Blake Nation earned his first victory as a Miner as he would go 5.1 innings and give up four runs off six hits but record eight strikeouts.
Southern Illinois struck early off Wild Things starter Shawn Blackwell as third baseman Carlos Mendez hit a base hit and RBI to give the Miners a 1-0 lead. The Miners added two more runs off Blackwell in the top of the second inning as left fielder Carlos Colmenares hit a two RBI base hit to score center fielder Tyler Hall and catcher Mario Mercedes to give Southern Illinois a 3-0 lead. Washington would add two runs off Nation in the bottom of the second inning to cut the Miners lead to one, 3-2.
With one out in the top of the third inning off Blackwell, right fielder Ken Gregory hit a three-run home run to give the Miners a 6-2 lead and they would never look back. In the top of the fifth inning, Gregory added another RBI as he hit a base hit off Blackwell to score second baseman Cannon Lester to make it a 7-2 game. Blackwell would be done after five innings.
Short stop Tyler Stubblefield hit a solo home run off Wild Things reliever Michael Hepple to extend the Miners lead 8-2. Washington would add three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, two off Nation and one off reliver Matt Royal to cut the Miners lead to 8-5.
Former Miners reliever Anthony Collazo would pitch in the top of the ninth inning after Miners reliever Matt Sergey pitched two scoreless innings, striking out three batters. Collazo would allow a triple and RBI to Cannon Lester to score pinch runner Jon Eisen to give the Miners a 9-5. Lester would score on a wild pitch to close the scoring at 10-5. Miners closer Brandon Cunniff would retire the side in the bottom of the ninth inning to secure the win for Southern Illinois, who would improve to 4-4 on the season.
The Miners look for the series win tomorrow night as they will face Washington Wild Things right handed pitcher Justin Hall. The Miners have not announced their starting pitcher. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 pm. The Heartland Regional Medical Center Pregame Show with Mike Ventola will get underway on the Miners Radio Network at 3:45 pm.
