Elmira Jackals News Release
Elmira, NY- "Compete, compete," yelled Jackals veteran forward Brett Pilkington during a drill at the Sunday morning practice. And compete they did. The Jackals, a proud member of the ECHL, finished their first weekend of training camp this past weekend and now look forward to a hard week of practice before the pre-season opener against the Reading Royals on Thursday, October 9th.
"We have a good group of guys that are working hard and competing every day. I am happy with our team speed." Said Jackals Head Coach Steve Martinson.
The Jackals club will grow as players from the American Hockey League Camps make their way to Elmira. Central Hockey League playoff MVP Rob McVicar will be in attendance today at the morning skate. McVicar, the native of Brandon, Manitoba spent the past few weeks in the Lake Erie Monsters training camp and now looks forward to tending goal in the ECHL.
Also back to Elmira is the 2007-2008 Jackals leading scorer Benoit Doucet. Totaling 83 points in 71 games last season for the Jackals, the Quebec product played for the Binghamton Senators and the Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League pre-season. Also spending time in the Rochester training camp was forward Tyler Donati, who will be on the ice today in Elmira.
Forward Steve Yetman will also join the Jackals this week after spending time in the Hamilton Bulldogs training camp along with defenseman Brandon Roach who was in the Manitoba Moose training camp.
The American Hockey League is still home to Jackals forwards Pierre-Luc Faubert (Binghamton), Josh Aspenlind (Lake Erie), defensemen Chris St. Croix (Binghamton) and Travis Gawryletz (Rochester).
Jackals Head Coach Steve Martinson is looking forward to the week ahead. "Right now we are working on some systems and getting everyone on the same page before we play four games in five nights."
The four game in five night stretch starts this Thursday October 9th, when the Jackals match up against hated rival, the Reading Royals, puck drops at 7:05 p.m. The following two nights, Friday the 10th and Saturday 11th, the Jackals host the Trenton Devils at 7:35 p.m. at First Arena. The final pre-season game is on Monday, October 13th in Reading. Tickets for all Jackals home games are now on sale at the First Arena Box Office.
The Jackals open the regular season on Friday, October 17th against the Reading Royals at 7:35 p.m. Join the fun outside of First Arena for the Jackals block party at 5:00 p.m. and get ready for an excellent season!
