Murphy And Miles Added To Checkers Roster

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - General manager and head coach of the Charlotte Checkers Derek Wilkinson announced today that forwards Ryan Murphy and Jeff Miles have agreed to terms with the team.

Miles, 6-foot-0, 190 pounds, has finished in the top 10 of ECHL scoring the past two seasons. Last year, he registered his personal best in offensive output scoring 29 goals and 47 assists for 76 points in 68 games with Columbia. The ninth round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks during the 2001 National Hockey League Entry Draft spent the bulk of the past two seasons playing for the Inferno while also getting called up to the Hershey Bears and Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League.

Murphy, 5-foot-11, 185 pounds, dressed in 37 games for the Checkers last season totaling eight goals, 20 assists for 28 points. Last season, the 2002 sixth round NHL draft pick of the Los Angeles Kings received call ups to both the Hartford Wolf Pack and Peoria Riverman (AHL). He dressed in nine and 10 games respectively registering an assist in Hartford.

The Checkers have also added goaltender Maxime Daigneault and defenseman Lyon Messier who is the son of NHL Hall of Famer Mark Messier to training camp on a try-out basis.

The Checkers are getting ready for their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. Opening night will take place on Halloween against the Augusta Lynx at a special 8 p.m. start. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date.
