Louisville Bats News Release
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - In a tale of pitching, the Louisville Colonels (46-57) and Rochester Red Wings (46-57) went inning for inning for the entire game until a walk-off hit in the tenth clinched a 3-2 Louisville win. The Colonels are now 6-3 in extra-inning games.
Robert Stephenson (10-6, 3.03) was nearly perfect for six of his seven innings. While unable to clinch his sixth consecutive win, going into the sixth inning he had retired eleven straight batters. He gave up two earned runs (one home run) from one hit while walking five and striking out five on 92 pitches (56 strikes). Stephenson's ERA for the month of July so far is 1.33, allowing just four earned runs in 27.0 innings of work.
The Red Wings would strike first in the third inning with a two-run homer from Taylor Motter to take an early lead but the Colonels were quick to react. In the home half of the inning, Louisville proved just how dangerous a couple of singles can be. Josh VanMeter was first, followed by C.J. McElroy. With two plated, Trahan followed with a third base hit to drive VanMeter home. Down by one, Scott Schebler walked to load the bases when a follow-up sac fly from Steve Selsky scored McElroy and tied the game 2-2.
From that point, the starting pitchers went out for out. The teams both went to the bullpens in attempts to get runs on the board but hitters were turned away from the plate empty handed.
Austin Brice lead the Colonels into the final two innings and was tremendous in his short outing. He recorded two strikeouts and ultimately took home his first win of the season.
It was Blake Trahan who would save the day. After a stellar night going 3-for-4 with a walk, he stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the 10th with Chadwick Tromp at third and Josh VanMeter at second waiting expectedly. Trahan then connected for a shallow single into right field to score Tromp and clinch a 3-2 Colonels win. The RBI marks Trahan's second walk-off hit of the season.
Louisville will hit the road on Monday for a three-game series against the Toledo Mud Hens. Left-hander Justin Nicolino (5-5, 4.36) will battle against fellow lefty Ryan Carpenter (1-6, 5.53). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. at Fifth Third Field.
