Asheville Tourists News Release

ASHEVILLE - For the first time this season, the Tourists were both swept at home and posted a losing record in a homestand. Columbus dealt Asheville a 4-2 loss, the fourth in a row for the Tourists in 2008 - also a first.

Columbus picked up three early runs against Cory Riordan, two of which were unearned. Shawn O'Malley was hit by a pitch in the first, stole second, advanced the third on a passed ball and scored on Reid Fronk's sacrifice fly. In the third, two more Catfish would cross the plate off Riordan (7-8); Stephen Vogt singled home Omar Luna, then scored on a wild pitch with Fronk at the plate to make it a 3-0 game.

For the third night in a row, the Tourists picked up five or fewer hits. One of them came in the seventh on Bo Bowman's solo home run - his second of the series and season - to put the Tourists on the board. The Catfish answered in the eighth on an RBI single by Henry Wrigley to reclaim their three-run lead at 4-1. Lars Davis drove a run home in the eighth inning with a single to bring the Tourists back to within two. Darin Holcomb followed with a base hit only to see Bowman strike out with two aboard to end the inning. Asheville threatened again in the ninth when Michael Mitchell was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. He was caught stealing with Brian Rike at the plate, and the threat died down, with Kevin Clark striking out to end the game. Alex Cobb (8-7) was spectacular for the Catfish in a scoreless six inning outing, allowing just two hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Austin Hinkle survived a wild ninth to pick up his tenth save of the season.

The Tourists are off on Wednesday and will travel to Lexington to begin a four-game weekend series with the Legends. Robinson Fabian (3-3, 5.57) will take the mound against Luis Pardo (1-5, 4.25) in the series opener on Thursday. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. and the game can be heard on the Tourists flagship station WRES-FM, 100.7. The Tourists return home for an eight-game homestand on Monday night against the Kannapolis Intimidators. It will be another Capital Banks Mega Money Monday at the ballpark with the first 750 fans receiving envelopes containing ticket vouchers, Tourists Bucks and cold, hard cash. First pitch is 7:05. The Asheville Tourists are the Single-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Tickets are available by contacting the front office at (828)-258-0428 or on the website, www.theashevilletourists.com.
