Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Charleston, WV- Joe Mahoney's RBI single with two outs in the fourth inning broke a 3-3 tie and gave the Shorebirds a 4-3 lead that they would cling to for the final five and half innings for the one-run victory on getaway evening in West Virginia. After a plethora of early offense, the two bullpens were dominant down the stretch. For Delmarva, Cliff Flagello's three scoreless innings paved the route to the closer Mick Mattaliano, whose 27th save protected the victory for Nathan Nery.
Ryan Adams registered two more hits for Delmarva in the series finale, finishing the four-game series with nine hits in 16 at bats against Power pitching. Paco Figueroa, playing his first game for Delmarva in the field after DHing in his previous four contests, also recorded a pair of infield singles while playing excellent defense.
Starter Nathan Nery ran into trouble in the second inning after the Shorebirds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Three runs came across on four singles and a walk and the Power led 3-1. After the Shorebirds got one back in the third inning on Pope's two out RBI single, the go-ahead tallies were plated in the fourth off West Virginia starter Evan Anundsen, who surrendered four runs on seven hits in four innings and lost for the first time since May 26. The Power seriously threatened in the fifth inning, loading the bases against Nery with only one out. Fortunately, Caleb Gindl lined the first pitch he saw right back at the pound. In self-defense, Nery stabbed the ball in midair and caught Steffan Wilson too far off first base for the fortuitous inning ending double play. With the win, the Shorebirds garner the season series with West Virginia 7-5 after the 2-2 split the past four days. Delmarva inches closer in the standings as well, now only five games behind first-place West Virginia with 25 contests remaining in the regular season.
