CHARLESTON, SC - Dr. Gene A. Budig, past president of Major League Baseball's American League and a co-owner of the Charleston RiverDogs, will autograph his new book, Grasping the Ring, on Saturday, Aug. 9, as part of the RiverDogs home game against the Rome Braves.

The game's first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with the gates opening at 6 o'clock. In Grasping the Ring: 9 Unique Winners in Life and Sports, with a forward by Bob Costas, Dr. Budig, who has met many interesting people during his illustrious career that include high-profile titans from business and industry, college and university presidents, labor leaders, journalists and media personalities. Singling out nine of these intriguing people for their unshakable values, Dr. Budig shares their stories - people who dared confront overwhelming odds, people who dared to dream ... and succeeded.

Dr. Budig was a university president/chancellor for 22 years before assuming the top job in the American League in 1994 (which he held until presidencies of the American League and the National League were abolished in 1999).

Budig graduated from the University of Nebraska and served as president of Illinois State University (1973-77), West Virginia University (1977-80) and was the chancellor of the University of Kansas (1980-94). A lecture hall at KU, Budig Hall, is named in his honor. Active in the Air National Guard, Dr. Budig retired at the rank of Major General in 1992.

Dr. Budig is in his second year as a co-owner of the RiverDogs and continues to serve as a senior advisor to Major League Baseball.

Other books penned by Dr. Budig include The Inside Pitch ... and More: Baseball's Business and the Public Trust (2004), A Game of Uncommon Skill: Leading the Modern College and University (2002), A Higher Education Map For The 1990s (1992) and Academic Quicksand: Some Trends and Issues in Higher Education (1973), among others.

All royalties due the author will be contributed to CollegeEd, a national program designed to dramatically increase the number of young people attending college from urban America.
