RiverDogs Surging Offense Continues Against Drive
August 5, 2008 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - Felix Doubront headed to the mound Tuesday night in hopes of stopping the hemorrhaging for the Drive (60-54, 20-24). But not even the staff ace had an answer for the RiverDogs (67-46, 22-21) red hot offense, who completed the four-game sweep with an 11-2 victory in front of 5,657 fans at Fluor Field.
It didn't take the RiverDogs long to put runs on the scoreboard as they scored four times in the top of the first. Singles by Justin Snyder, Jesus Montero, and Austin Romine led to Charleston's first run, before Brandon Laird belted his fifth round tripper of the series with a three-run shot.
Doubront's (12-7) outing was cut short after three innings of work, when the RiverDogs tagged the lefty for three more runs in the third. Romine and Austin Krum hit back-to-back singles, setting up another three-run homer, this time off the bat of Carmen Angelini.
Despite allowing seven runs on seven hits and a walk, Doubront still managed to record five strikeouts.
After Charleston extended their lead to nine with single runs in fifth and sixth innings, the Drive broke up Dellin Betances bid for a shutout in the bottom of the seventh. Michael Almanzar led off with a single and after advancing to second on a wild pitch, scored on Zach Penprase's single.
Other than the one run, Betances (7-3) was nearly flawless in his outing. The right-hander scattered six hits and a walk over 6.2 innings, striking out seven batters.
The Drive scored their second and final run of the ballgame in their final at bat off, in similar fashion as their first run. Oscar Tejeda singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and later scored on a single by Juan Apodaca.
Jered Stanley, Almanzar and Penprase accounted for six of the Drive's eight hits, with each tallying a pair.
After an off day on Wednesday, the Drive travel to Kannapolis, NC for a four-game set with the Intimidators beginning Thursday at 7:05 PM. Left-hander Jose Capellan will head to the mound for Greenville as Kannapolis counters with right-hander Charlie Shirek.
Greenville returns home to Fluor Field on Monday, August 11th when they begin an eight-game homestand. During the homestand, the Drive will welcome their 1,000,000th fan to Fluor Field.
