Tourists Split Doubleheader

April 7, 2012 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Asheville Tourists News Release

Saturday night was a long night of baseball at McCormick field and both teams involved were able to take a victory home when the night was over. The Tourists used a five-run frame in Game One to pick up their first win of the season, 8-4 over Delmarva. Game Two belonged to the Shorebirds as they put up three crooked numbers on the scoreboard, winning 8-2 to close out the evening.

Asheville fell behind 1-0 in game one, but tied it up in the bottom of the first on Sam Mende's RBI double to left. After Delmarva recaptured the lead with a Sammie Starr RBI single in the second, Mende tied the game once again, this time with a sacrifice fly to right.

The Tourists took the lead in the fourth when Tyler Massey raced home from second on a throwing error by Jason Esposito, making it 3-2. The home team then built some insurance with a five-run fifth inning. The frame was highlighted by a two-run double from David Kandilas and a two-run single by Delta Cleary Jr. Trevor Story also connected with an RBI single.

Delmarva was able to score a pair of runs late, but the Tourists held on for the victory. The two runs did give the Shorebirds some momentum heading into the second half of the doubleheader.

In Game Two, the Shorebirds jumped out to and early lead once again; plating a pair of runs in the second inning. Cleary Jr. scored in the third to pull the Tourists within one, but Asheville would never lead as Delmarva pulled away with two in the fourth and three more in the sixth. John Ruettiger finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs scored, an RBI, and a stolen base. Ruettiger has tallied four stolen bases in the series thus far.

Mikey Planeta reached base four times for the visitors and Wynston Sawyer also delivered a big two-run double in the game. The Tourists were able to claim the first Home Run of the series when Jared Simon went deep in Asheville's half of the sixth. The solo shot over the left-field wall was not enough; however, as Delmarva clinched at least a series split with the 8-2 win.

The same two teams meet up Sunday afternoon for the series finale at McCormick Field.
