Hagerstown Suns News Release
Hagerstown, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (2-1), Single-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, used starting pitcher Alex Meyer's five shutout innings and reliever Aaron Barrett's clutch two-inning save to beat the West Virginia Power, 4-3, at Municipal Stadium on Saturday night.
Meyer (1-0) controlled the game in his professional debut, allowing just two hits and no walks while striking out five Power hitters. West Virginia managed a run on reliever Bobby Lucas and two more against Alex Kreis before Barrett (1) took the mound with runners on the corners and no outs in the eighth. He was able to induce a double-play ball off the bat of LF Willie Garcia and then struck out DH Greg Polanco, leaving the tying run stranded at third base to end the inning. Barrett allowed a one-out base runner in the ninth inning, but delivered another double-play ball to end the game and notch his first save of the season.
Third baseman Matt Skole had the first three-hit game of the season by a Suns player, going 3-for-4 with his team leading fifth RBI. Shortstop Jason Martinson added a pair of hits and his second RBI of the year in the game, while centerfielder Brian Goodwin doubled in a run, tying him with Skole for the team lead with five RBIs.
Power starting pitcher Matt Benedict (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up three unearned runs over 4.2 innings of work with seven strike outs. Centerfielder Junior Sosa was 2-for-3 with an RBI triple.
The Suns and Power will complete the four-game series at Municipal Stadium on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. when Hagerstown left-hander Kylin Turnbull (0-0) gets the ball. He'll face West Virginia's LHP Zac Fuesser (0-0) in an Easter Sunday matinee. Fans can have their picture taken with the Easter Bunny during tomorrow's game, and after every Sunday afternoon game kids get to run the bases. Individual game tickets, season tickets, mini-plans, and group are now on sale. For more information and to reserve your seat at Municipal Stadium, call 301-791-6266, or www.hagerstownsuns.com.
