Hickory Overwhelms Intimidators in Game 1

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (April 7, 2012) -- The Hickory Crawdads shutout the Kannapolis Intimidators, 8-0, in the first game of a doubleheader at CMC-NorthEast Stadium on Saturday night.

Zach Cone, Kevin Torres and Jorge Alfaro led off the top of the second inning with consecutive singles, and Jeremy Williams put the Crawdads on the board first by following with a two-run double. Drew Robinson grounded a ball thru Intimidators first baseman Leighton Pangilinan. The two-base error resulted in two more Crawdads runs. Robinson scored on a Luis Sardinas ground out to give Hickory a 5-0 lead after the top of the second. Robinson added an RBI-double in Hickory's two- run top of the third.

Intimidators starter Daniel Webb (0-1) allowed seven runs (five earned) on eight hits while striking out three in three innings in a losing effort. Terance Marin came on in relief, pitching a scoreless fourth and fifth inning before an error gave Hickory another run in the sixth. Jefferson Olacio, an 18-year-old left-hander, made his season debut with a scoreless seventh inning. Olacio hit the first batter he faced before striking out the next three to get out of the inning.

Hickory starter Victor Payano (1-0) tossed five scoreless innings to earn the win, allowing two hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Nick Martinez pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh for Hickory.

The Intimidators and Crawdads will begin Game 2 of today's doubleheader at 8:45 p.m. at CMC-NorthEast Stadium. The two teams wrap up this season-opening series on Sunday at 3:05 p.m. The Intimidators will host a pre-game Easter Egg Hunt at 2:30 p.m. with 7,000 eggs and prizes scattered across the outfield.
