Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Phillip Cuadrado collected three hits including a 2-run home run and the Asheville Tourists squashed a late Charleston rally to defeat the RiverDogs, 5-3, in South Atlantic League action Monday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
With the victory, the Tourists have taken the first three of this four-game series and improve to 14-11 in the season's second half (49-46 overall) as the RiverDogs slip to 12-13 in the second half (50-45 overall).
The Tourists got on the scoreboard in the first inning as Eric Young recorded an RBI when he grounded out to short, scoring Dexter Fowler. Fowler then drove home a run in the third on a single up the middle.
Cuadrado belted the first pitch he saw from Charleston starter Bryan Villalona (7-6) in the sixth inning for his seventh homer of the season, a two-out shot that brought home Cole Garner, who had singled.
Asheville added another run in the eighth inning on Garner's RBI double, and the Tourists led comfortably 5-0 entering the bottom of the ninth.
But the RiverDogs, who were facing their potential sixth shutout of the season, began a one-out rally against closer Andrew Johnston when pinch-hitter Irwil Rojas hit a ground-rule double. Pinch-hitter Estee Harris followed with a single up the middle that plated Rojas to make the score 5-1.
With Harris on first, Austin Jackson hit the ball to Young, the second baseman, who flipped the ball to shortstop Chris Nelson and pulled Nelson off the bag for an error. Nelson then overthrew first base and was also charged with an error, enabling Harris to score and Jackson to take second.
Marcos Vechionacci followed with a run-scoring single, but Reegie Corona hit into a game-ending double-play.
Cuadrado and Garner each collected three hits to lead Asheville, while Vechionacci and Corona each had a pair of hits for Charleston.
Asheville starter Xavier Cedeno (6-6) picked up the win as he went six complete innings, scattered five hits and fanned seven. For Charleston, reliever R.J. Swindle permitted his first earned run of the season after 17.1 innings of work.
On the night, Charleston stranded nine base runners.
Asheville goes for the series sweep as the home stand concludes Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. when Charleston sends lefty Garrett Patterson (0-2, 4.68 ERA) to the hill while Asheville counters with all-star lefty Brandon Durden (7-2, 3.11 ERA).
