Valdez complete game shutout leads Hickory to eighth straight win

Hickory Crawdad right hander Luis Valdez allowed five singles and one walk while striking out seven in a complete game 2-0 shutout of Delmarva Monday night at L.P. Frans Stadium. Valdez threw 107 pitches and allowed just one Shorebird to reach second base in the first complete game shutout of the season for a Crawdad. A crowd of 2,278 watched as the ‘Dads won their eighth straight game and third in a row against Delmarva.

Hickory got on the board against Delmarva starter Kyle Schmidt in the bottom of the third inning. With one out 2B Cameron Blair singled and stole second. Hickory 3B Eddie Prasch followed with an RBI single to make it 1-0.

The ‘Dads added a run in the sixth inning. Crawdad CF Andrew McCutchen's leadoff homer against Schmidt made it 2-0. Hickory managed just five total hits in the game. Blair tallied two of them.

Valdez (5-2) picked up the win. Schmidt (0-1) took the loss. Schmidt allowed two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out seven in six innings. Josh Potter pitched two scoreless innings out of the Delmarva bullpen.

The two teams play the final game of the four game series at noon on Tuesday. Hickory right hander Joe Bauserman faces Delmarva righty Brad Bergesen.
