Asheville Tourists News Release

CHARLESTON, SC-- The Asheville Tourists had been struggling to score runs against the Charleston RiverDogs all year. On Sunday evening, the Tourists finally broke through with a big rally in the top of the eighth. With the game tied 1-1, Asheville plated four runs in the eighth; propelling them to a 6-3 victory over Charleston.

The Tourists opened up the scoring with a run in the top of the first. Brendan Rodgers singled and took second when Yonathan Daza was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Sam Hilliard bounced a single back up the middle to score Rodgers from second base. The RiverDogs countered with a run in the bottom of the first when Chris Gittens smacked a solo Home Run to right-centerfield.

Trey Killian settled in for Asheville after allowing the Home Run. Killian kept the RiverDogs off the scoreboard for the next five innings. Asheville had very few chances to recapture the lead until the top of the eighth. Charleston reliever Willie Gabay then ran into trouble.

Brian Mundell walked to begin the frame, took second on a wild pitch, and then took third on a passed ball. Daza doubled home Mundell to give the Tourists a 2-1 lead. The next batter, Hilliard, crushed a ground-rule double plating Daza. Chris Rabago followed with an RBI single to center. Later in the inning, Carlos Herrera notched a sacrifice fly to cap the rally.

Gittens hit a two-run Home Run in the bottom of the eighth but Asheville worked a bases loaded walk in the top of the ninth for the game's final run. Devin Burke recorded the final four outs to earn his first save of the season.

The Tourists are 1-3 through the first four games of their road trip. Asheville now heads to Greensboro to open up a three-game series. Monday night's game against the Grasshoppers will begin at 7:00pm.
