PREVIEW: Delmarva and Lakewood meet in the final game of a four game series this weekend at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The Shorebirds walked off with a win on Thursday night, lost a frustrating game full of defensive mistakes on Friday, and won an early slugfest last night. Delmarva's win, coupled with Hagerstown's loss, really helped the Shorebirds chance at a Northern Division title with the first half winding down - the 'Birds are now four games back of Suns with nine games left to play. This is the third series between these two teams since May 19th, with Delmarva having a 7-4 edge through the first 11 games with a ridiculous 1.54 team ERA. Since the Shorebirds opened the season with a 4-6 mark and lost two of the first three series, they have a series record of 9-3-2 over their last 14 sets, going 30-20 over that stretch.
TONIGHT'S OPPONENT: Left-hander Tyler Gilbert takes the mound for the BlueClaws. The Shorebirds have not faced Gilbert yet this season. He is a former sixth round selection out of the University of Southern California in the 2015 MLB First Year Player Draft. The Felton, California native is making his 21st career appearance and his 19th professional start. He is looking for his third consecutive win after beating West Virginia and Lexington in his last two starts, allowing three earned runs over 13 innings combined.
LAST GAME QUICK HITS: The Shorebirds rode Cedric Mullins, Ryan Mountcastle and Yermin Mercedes to a 5-4 win that featured lots of early offense and some solid pitching from the bullpen. Mercedes snapped an 0-for-16 slump with a critical, momentum-shifting 2-run home run in the bottom of the third. Mountcastle blasted his second bomb of the week, which proved to be the game's final run. Reid Love earned his fourth win on the hill and Ryan Meisinger grabbed the save.
