Columbia Fireflies News Release

COLUMBIA, SC - The Fireflies went for the four-game sweep of the Power Sunday afternoon, but fell short, 5-2, at Spirit Communications Park. Vinny Siena reached base safely three times and finished an impressive 6-for-12 at the plate with six runs scored in the series.

The UConn product was at it again in the first inning. Siena laced a single up the middle to improve his average to .460 (23-50) in the first inning of games this season. After consecutive groundouts to third base, Luis Ortega ripped a base hit to center field to plate Siena. That's all Columbia (32-31) would get against Power righty Bret Helton (W, 3-5).

Fast forward to the third frame, West Virginia (31-31) grabbed its first lead of the entire series. After a pair of singles and an error, Power second baseman Mitchell Tolman flicked a bases-clearing double to right field. Then Ke'Bryan Hayes poked a single to center field to score Tolman. The visitors held a 4-1 advantage.

In the top half of the fifth inning, Tito Polo launched his South Atlantic League-best 11th home run of the season off of Kevin Canelon (L, 4-4). The Fireflies lefty still pitched well in the contest. Canelon logged seven innings of work and allowed just three earned runs. He's registered a quality start in each of his last six outings.

The home team pushed another run across in the sixth frame. Pat Mazeika pounded a double down the right-field line. Dash Winningham used a run-scoring single to drive him home.

Johnny Magliozzi was locked in once again out of the Columbia bullpen. The right-hander from Milton, Massachusetts, retired all six batters he faced. Magliozzi hasn't given up an earned run in his last 8.2 innings pitched.

The Fireflies welcome Rome (Atlanta Braves) to Spirit Communications Park for the second time this season on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Righty Tyler Badamo (3-3, 3.84) toes the rubber and opposes Braves right-hander Touki Toussaint (1-5, 5.51).

You can watch the action on MiLB.TV or listen in on WGCV 620 AM, 105.1 and 96.3 FM, ColumbiaFireflies.com and the TuneIn Radio app starting at 7:00 p.m.
