Tortugas Take Middle Game over Dunedin 9-8

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - Bruce Yari finished 2-for-2 with an RBI double, a three run homerun, and three walks on Tuesday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Yari matched his single game career highs in RBI's, walks, and extra base hits. Seven of Daytona's 13 hits went for extra bases.

The Tortugas trailed 2-0 after the second. First, Riley Adams led off the inning with a first-pitch double, moved to third on a wild pitch and came into score on a Chad Spanberger RBI groundout. Then with two-out, Ivan Castillo drove in Joshua Palacios from second with a single.

Kevin Smith led off the top of the third inning with a 428 foot solo homerun to left-center of of LHP Wennington Romero, his 14th of the year, to put Dunedin up 3-0.

After back-to-back walks to start the third, RHP Patrick Murphy struckout Ibandel Isabel for the first out. Yari came up next and hit a three-run homerun 373 feet over the left field wall, his fifth of the year, to tie the game at three.

Daytona used a four run fourth to take their first lead. The Tortugas drew back-to-back walks to begin the inning ahead of Michael Beltre, who lined the first pitch he saw down the right field line for a two-run triple. Beltre came into score on the next pitch after Randy Ventura chopped a grounder over the drawn-in infield to put the Tortugas up 6-3. Ventura came around to score on a two-out double from Yari extend the lead to 7-3.

Brantley Bell led the fifth off with a first-pitch single, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Stuart Fairchild one-out single to put the Tortugas up 8-3.

Dunedin cut their down the deficit with a pair in the sixth. LHP Ty Boyles started the inning but walked two and hit one to load up the bases before he was pulled for LHP Carlos Diaz. Diaz gave up an RBI double to Ivan Castillo to score one, but it could have been more as Taylor Trammell cut down a runner trying to score from second for his fourth outfield assist. With one-out and runners on second and third Logan Warmoth grounded out to short to drive in the Blue Jays fifth run.

Fairchild led off the bottom of the seventh with a single then scored on a one-out single off the bat of Ventura to put Daytona up 9-5.

The Blue Jays scored three in the eighth to make it interesting. With two outs and runners on first and second, Brock Lundquist drove in a pair with a double to center off RHP Aaron Fossas to make it a two-run game. Fossas was pulled after the double in favor of RHP Joel Kuhnel who allowed Adams to drive in Lundquist from second with a single to round out the scoring at 9-8.

Boyles (5-8) earned the win in relief. He did not allow a hit but surrendered a pair of runs and walks in an inning with a strikeout. LHP Nick Hartman (1-1) takes the loss. Hartman allowed five runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings with a pair of walks and three strikeouts. RHP Joel Kuhnel earned his 14th save of the year. He allowed two hits, struck out one and got the final four outs.

The Tortugas will go for their eighth series sweep tomorrow night when they send LHP Scott Moss (13-3, 3.63) to the mound. He will be opposed by LHP Zach Logue (7-2, 2.67).

First pitch Wednesday is scheduled for 7:05 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:50 PM with The Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.

NOTES: The Tortugas improve 37-1 when leading after 8... Daytona has now won back-to-back games for the first time since 7/21-7/23...
