Daytona Tortugas News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Tortugas scored early and often Wednesday night, after taking a 9-1 lead after three, Daytona cruised to a 10-3 victory at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. LHP Scott Moss allowed three runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 with a walk and six strikeouts to become the first pitcher in all of Minor League Baseball to reach 14 wins.
Moss becomes just the sixth pitcher in the Florida State League since 2005 to reach 14 wins, and the first since his teammate RHP Tejay Antone did so in 2016. Since 5/22, Moss is 11-1 with a 2.44 ERA (13 starts). No pitcher in all of baseball (MiLB or MLB) has more then 9 victories during that span.
After LHP Zach Logue retired the Tortuga lead-off hitter, the next four Tortugas reached base. Ibandel Isabel doubled, moved to third on a Bruce Yari single and scored on a Tyler Stephenson RBI double. Yari moved first-to-third on the play and came into score on a Brantley Bell RBI single to go up 2-0. Stephenson moved to third on the Bell hit and scored on a Stuart Fairchild sacrifice fly. With two-away and Bell on first, Alfredo Rodriguez crushed a two-run homerun 386 feet to left to extend the lead to 5-0.
Ivan Castillo got Dunedin a run back after hitting a one-out, 353 foot solo homerun to left off of Moss in the second.
Daytona grew their lead in the third, starting the inning with five straight base hits. Yari, Stephenson, and Bell loaded the bases with singles and Fairchild drove two in with a double off the centerfield wall. Rodriguez followed by hitting a two-run single to extend the lead to 9-1.
With two outs in the top of the fourth, Chad Spanberger hit a two-out infield single to score Alberto Mineo from third and cut the deficit to 9-2.
The Tortugas got the run back in their half of the fourth, after loading up the bases without an out, Stephenson hit a sacrifice fly to score Randy Ventura, running the lead to 10-2.
Dunedin rounded out the scoring at 10-3 in the fifth as Kevin Smith hit a two-out single to score Nash Knight from second.
The game was called after a 30-minute rain delay with one-out and runners on second and third in the top of the ninth.
Moss (14-3) takes the win, his fourth straight. Logue (7-3) gets the loss, he allowed nine runs on ten hits in two innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Daytona will welcome the Jupiter Hammerheads for a four game series at The Jack starting on Thursday. RHP Andrew Jordan (1-4, 5.46) will get the ball in the opener.
First pitch Thursday is scheduled for 7:05 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:45 PM with The Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
