Austin Spurs News Release
Austin, TX March 23, 2011 - The Austin Toros defeated the Iowa Energy 120-111 Thursday night at Cedar Park Center. The Toros had six players finish in double digits and the Energy's Curtis Stinson led all scorers, recording a triple-double with 31 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists.
The Energy took an early 10-3 lead, but Leo Lyons's seven first quarter points helped the Toros stay close. The Energy led the Toros by just three points at the end of the first period. With 5:28 to play in the second quarter, the Toros took their first lead of the game after a Marcus Cousin field goal. The Energy fought back and recaptured the lead, ending the first half 59-56.
The Toros evened the score early in the third quarter on a Kyle Weaver 3-pointer, and then quickly took the lead thanks to a steal by Leo Lyons and a jump shot by Marcus Cousin. In a quarter that saw two ties and four lead changes, the Energy came out on top going into the fourth. The Energy maintained their lead in the fourth until Marcus Cousin pushed the Toros ahead 102-101 with a jumper at 3:49.
The Toros extended their lead to five after two consecutive Lance Thomas three-point plays with a little over 1:30 on the clock. With 25 seconds left to play, Kyle Weaver caused a key turnover that led to two Kevin Palmer free throws, giving the Toros a four-point lead. This lead proved to be too much for the Energy and the Toros ran away with a 120-111 victory over the Energy who currently have the best record in the D-League.
The Toros were led in scoring by Marcus Cousin (22) and Kevin Palmer (21). Marqus Blakely followed Stinson in scoring for the Energy with 22 points and five rebounds.
The Austin Toros (20-24) will face off with the Idaho Stampede Saturday, March 26 at noon and Sunday, March 27 at 5:00 p.m. at Cedar Park Center. The Toros will host Military Appreciation Day during Saturday's game. The Iowa Energy (34-12) will play the Erie Bayhawks Friday, March 25 at Erie.
