Austin, TX March 2- After difficult back-to-back games over the weekend, the Toros were able to recover with an impressive win over the Tulsa 66ers Tuesday night at the Austin Convention Center, 95-87.
On his second assignment this season with the 66ers, Byron Mullens (21 points, eight rebounds) scored the first eight points for Tulsa. Curtis Jerrells and Dwayne Jones both scored seven points in the quarter, leading the Toros to end the period with a 25-18 advantage.
Rookie Alonzo Gee scored 12 consecutive points between the final minute of the first and start of the second quarter. After a pair of made free throws from Jones with 3:50 left before intermission, the Toros obtained their biggest lead of the half, 13. Mullens three-point basket at the buzzer shortened the Toros lead, 51-45.
Kyle Weaver (15 points, 10 rebounds), also on assignment from the Oklahoma City Thunder, scored 10 in the third, more than the rest of the team combined. Eddie Basden (12 points, five rebounds) gave the Toros their biggest lead of the night midway through the quarter after a shot from downtown, putting Austin up 64-49.
In an effort to come back, Mustafa Shakur added 10 points for the 66ers in the fourth, cutting the deficit to seven early in the quarter before teammate Latavious Williams' jump shot cut it to five, 78-73.
adidas player of the game Gee led all in scoring with 28 points and seven rebounds. Jones earned another double-double with 26 points and 14 rebounds.
Both teams will head to Tulsa (19-16) Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off. It will be the first game of a seven game road trip for the Toros (23-12).
