Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Atlantic City, NJ -- Lefty Ryan Lobban tossed six strong innings and the Worcester offense pounded out 14 more hits, as the Tornadoes extended their winning streak to a season-best five straight games with a 4-2 win over the Atlantic City Surf at Bernie Robbins Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Tornadoes wasted little time jumping on Surf lefthander Brian Rodaway (9-7), as B.J. Weed and Chris Colabello laced back-to-back one-out doubles in the 1st inning to put Worcester on top, 1-0. Colabello's double was his 27th of the year, setting a Tornadoes franchise record for two-baggers in a single season. Worcester tacked on single runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings, courtesy of RBI singles from Josh Farkes and Alex Trezza, for a 3-0 lead. Colabello continued his demolition of Atlantic City pitching, ripping a Rodaway offering over all three decks of signs in leftfield for a solo home run in the 5th inning and a 4-0 Tornadoes lead. Meanwhile, lefty Ryan Lobban (3-1), making his first start in a Tornadoes uniform, was outstanding, allowing just one run on a Josh Burrus RBI single with two outs in the 6th inning. Chandler Barnard served up a long home run to Anthony Granato in the 8th, but Closer John Birtwell came on to put out the fire, retiring all four batters he faced to seal the victory. Lobban (3-1) picked up the win and Rodaway (9-7) took the loss for the third time in as many starts against the Tornadoes in 2008. Birtwell recorded his 11th save of the season.

Colabello has now hit six home runs and driven in 19 runs in 12 games against the Surf this year. The Tornadoes are now at a season-high 11 games over .500 (44-33) and have moved into sole possession of second place in the overall standings. Worcester will look to sweep the four-game series from the Surf on Thursday night when they send righty Junior Guerrero to the mound opposite Atlantic City righthander Derek Barrows. First pitch is set for 7:05pm.

Worcester returns home on Tuesday, Aug. 19 for the final homestand of the season which is highlighted by Back to School NightFireworks Show on August 22, Fan Appreciation Night/Fireworks Show on the 23rd, and Tykes Club on the 24th!
