Atlantic City Surf News Release

Atlantic City, N.J. - Atlantic City SS Anthony Granato rocketed an eighth-inning solo blast over the left-field wall, but it was one of the team's few highlights on the evening, as the Surf fell to the Worcester Tornadoes, 4-2, in a Can-Am League fixture at Bernie Robbins Stadium on Wednesday. The victory marked the third consecutive victory in the four-game series for Worcester. Atlantic City has had little luck against the Tornadoes this season, as the visitors run their record against the Surf to 9-3.

Worcester built an early lead with single runs in each of the first three frames. In the first, 1B Chris Colabello doubled down the right-field line, his 27th two-bagger of the season, bringing home CF B.J. Weed. The second inning saw a two-out RBI single by DH Jason Farkes, while C Alex Trezza had an RBI single in the third, bringing home Colabello.

The Tornadoes made it a 4-0 game in the fifth with Colabello's solo home run to left. The Surf wouldn't get on the board until the sixth, when LF Joe Burke hit a two-out double to center, and scored on an RBI single from RF Josh Burrus. Atlantic City added its second run of the night on Granato's dinger in the eighth, but could come no closer.

In his first start of the season after making 26 relief appearances, Ryan Lobban (3-1) earned the win for Worcester, allowing a run on six hits in six innings, fanning four. John Birtwell picked up his eleventh save, throwing a perfect inning and one-third. Brian Rodaway (9-7) netted the loss for Atlantic City, throwing six and two-thirds and giving up four earned runs. Walker Whitley was stellar in relief for the Surf, allowing just one hit in two and one-third innings of work, and striking out five of the nine batters he faced.

Colabello, LF Francisco Caraballo and 3B Mike MacMillan each had three hits for the Tornadoes. After going a combined 7-for-8 in Worcester's two wins on Tuesday, Atlantic City held Can-Am League batting average leader RF Scott Grimes to an 0-for-4 evening. For the Surf, Burke had two doubles, while DH Clyde Williams and 2B Brad Thoma each had a pair of base knocks. With three doubles on the evening, Atlantic City moved into the league lead in the category with 152.

Atlantic City tries for a victory in the final game of the series on Thursday evening at 7:05 p.m. Derek Barrows (2-1) is scheduled to throw for the Surf, while the Tornadoes dispatch Junior Guerrero (6-5) to the hill.
