American Defenders of New Hampshire News Release

(Nashua, N.H., August 13, 2008) Nashua Pride officials announced today the signing of Edgar Clemente, nephew of the late Hall of Famer, Roberto Clemente.

Clemente, a 5-feet 11-inch, 180-pound outfielder, joins the Pride having played in 71 games this season with the Laredo Broncos of the independent United League. He batted .294 with 21 doubles, 13 home runs, and 56 RBI.

The Bayamon, Puerto Rico, native is in his 15th professional season, having played in the Major Leagues with both the Colorado Rockies in 1998 and 1999 and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2000. In 114 career games in the big leagues, Clemente batted .249 with eight home runs and 32 RBI.

Clemente will join the Pride as a career .275 hitter in minor league baseball, having belted 179 career home runs with 685 RBI. After spending 2001 and 2002 in the Boston Red Sox organization, reaching as high as the Class-AAA level, he has been playing professionally within independent baseball.

The late Roberto Clemente, a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, is known as one of the greatest humanitarians baseball has ever seen. Elected to the Hall of Fame in 1973, Roberto Clemente was tragically killed in a plane crash at the age of 38 while flying relief supplies to Nicaraguan earthquake victims. Roberto Clemente was the first Latin born player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and is the only current Hall of Famer to have the mandatory five year waiting period waived.

Roberto Clemente played with the Pittsburg Pirates for all 14 of his Major League seasons, finishing as a career .317 hitter and a member of the 3,000 hit club. He also won 12 Gold Gloves, the National League MVP award (1966) and a World Series MVP (1971). He played in two World Series and hit safely in all 14 games, finishing as a .362 in the Fall Classic.

The Nashua Pride Professional Baseball Club, in its 11th season, provides a fun, affordable, community-based and fan-friendly source of sports entertainment. The 2007 Can-Am League Champions are participating in its third year of play in the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball.
