Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Nashua, NH -- Chris Colabello contributed RBI doubles in each game of the doubleheader, as the Worcester Tornadoes swept the twinbill in Nashua, defeating the Pride in Game One, 3-2, then winning Game Two, 6-3, at Historic Holman Stadium on Friday night.
In Game One, the Tornadoes snapped a scoreless tie in the top of the 3rd inning, using a B.J. Weed RBI single, a Colabello RBI double and a fielding error by Pride centerfielder Ervin Alcantara to jump out on top, 3-0. Tornadoes righty Alex Pena (2-3) worked his way out of trouble in the 1st and 2nd innings, but surrendered a run in the 4th on a pair of singles and a Dorian Rojas sacrifice fly that made it 3-1. The Pride got to Pena again in the 6th, as Mike Torres a lined a two-out solo home run over e wall in rightcenter to bring Nashua within one run at 3-2. But Closer John Birtwell came in to put out the fire, recording the final four outs of the game. Alex Pena (2-3) picked up his second win in less than a week and Nashua starter Hideki Nagasaka (6-4) took the loss. Birtwell was credited with his 10th save.
In Game Two, the Tornadoes jumped all over rookie righthander Ryan Buckland early, as Colabello doubled home Weed who had singled in the top half of the 1st inning. The Pride tied it off righty Chandler Barnard in the bottom of the 1st on a Ismael Castro RBI single, but Jeff LaHair untied it in the 2nd inning, blasting his career-high 5th home run of the season to leftfield, a two-run shot that made it 3-1, Worcester. The Tornadoes tacked on two more runs in the 3rd, as Alex Trezza's two-run triple off the top of the rightfield wall made it 5-1 and sent Buckland to the showers. The Pride would close within two runs in the bottom of the 3rd against Barnard, as a Jerod Edmondson single, a Sandy Almonte double and an Omar Pena error plated two for Nashua, making it 5-3 Worcester. But the Tornadoes bullpen combo of Anthony Sullivan and Eddie Pena silenced the Pride bats, as the two teamed up for four, one-hit shutout innings to finish off the win. Worcester tacked on an insurance run in the 6th on an Omar Pena RBI double to provide the final margin. Sullivan (1-0) picked up his first Tornadoes victory and Buckland (0-1) was tagged with his first pro defeat. Eddie Pena recorded his second save in as many night and his 5th of the season.
Worcester is now riding a season-high-tying four-game winning streak, and is tied with Quebec for second place in the Can-Am League's Second Half, just one game behind first place Atlantic City. The doubleheader sweep was the second of the season for the Tornadoes, as they are now 6-4 in doubleheader games on the year. Worcester will shoot for a season-high five-game winning streak on Saturday night when they play Game Three of their four-game home-and-home series in Nashua against the Pride. Righty Matt Weagle will get the start for Worcester and he will be opposed by Nashua righthander Lance Stevens. First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
