New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - The New Jersey Jackals (5-13) celebrated the return to the lineup of leadoff hitter Marcus Sanders by snapping a nine-game losing streak with a 4-2 win against the Ottawa Rapidz (7-11) on Friday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. Sanders had missed the past 22 games with a dislocated thumb.

In the win, Jackals starter Jorge Acosta (1-2) earned his first win as a Jackal, firing seven innings and allowing two runs on six hits while striking out five batters. Closer Rusty Tucker also reached a milestone, hurling a perfect ninth inning to earn his league-leading 16th save of the season, as well as his 30th career save with New Jersey, surpassing Mike Hartung (1998-99) for the all-time lead. For the third straight day, the Jackals jumped out to a first inning lead when SS Bryant Nelson singled to right before scoring two batters later when LF Luke Allen unleashed an RBI double to the gap in right center to give New Jersey a 1-0 advantage. In the bottom of the fourth, the Jackals scored two unearned runs to extend their lead to 3-0. RF Marcos Rodriguez led off with a walk and, with one out, CF Zack Smithlin lined a single up the middle to put runners on first and second. The next batter, Sanders, reached on an error by Ottawa SS Juan Infante which plated Rodriguez to make it 2-0 New Jersey. Jackals SS Bryant Nelson then lifted a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 3-0.

Ottawa got on the board in the top of the fifth when RF Pete Pirman, who doubled with one out, scored on an RBI single by DH Nate Hall to cut the Jackals lead to 3-1. The next inning, the Rapidz made it 3-2 when New Jersey native Jake Daubert led off with his second home run of the season. However, that was as close as Ottawa would get as the Jackals added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Sanders to cap the scoring at 4-2. Ottawa starter Noel Baca (2-8) took the loss after surrendering three runs - one earned - in 4 2/3 innings while walking five batters and striking out three.

The Jackals and Rapidz continue their three-game series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. when New Jersey left-hander Isaac Pavlik (5-4, 4.06 ERA) takes the hill against Ottawa righty Adam Hawes (4-7, 5.89 ERA). If you can't make it out to Yogi Berra Stadium, you can catch every inning via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the broadcast beginning five minutes prior to first pitch.
