Ottawa Voyageurs News Release

(LITTLE FALLS, NJ) Friday, August 1, 2008 - The Ottawa Rapidz, looking to continue their domination over New Jersey, took on the Jackals Friday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. New Jersey benefited from a great effort from their pitchers to put an end to their nine-game losing streak, beating the Rapidz 4 to 2.

The Jackals, who tried to distance themselves from their troubles after their last series sweep by Ottawa, began their scoring in the first inning. Bryant Nelson singled and then scored on Luke Allen's double to give New Jersey a 1-0 lead. The home team increased their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Marcos Rodriguez led off with a walk and later scored on an error and Nelson hit a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0 Surf.

After a slow start the Rapidz got some offense from the bottom of their lineup in the top of the fifth. Pete Pirman doubled and scored when Nate Hall singled and Jake Daubert extended his arms on a fastball to collect his second homerun. Ottawa closed the gap making it a 3-2 game in favour of New Jersey.

Zach Smithlin hit a one-out single, stole second base and then scored on Marcus Sanders' single to add a run to New Jersey's lead after six innings.

Noel Baca III (2-8) suffered the loss for the Rapidz. The righty pitched 4.2 innings, allowing three runs (only one earned), on four hits, five walks, and three strike outs. The win goes to Jorge Acosta (1-2). The lefty out forth a great performance with a quality start. He pitched seven innings and allowed two runs (both earned), on six innings, only one walk and struck out five batters. Rusty Tucker entered the game in the ninth and pitched a perfect inning to earn his 16th save of the season.

The series continues on Saturday, August 2 at 7:05pm. The right hander Adam Hawes (4-7, 5.89 ERA) will try to lead the Rapidz to the victory with Isaac Pavlik (5-4, 4.06 ERA) starting for the Surf.

The Rapidz return home on August 4 for a seven-game home stand against the Sussex Skyhawks and the Brockton Rox.
