Tornadoes Sweep Pride in Twin Bill; 3-2, 6-3

(NASHUA, N.H. - August 1st, 2008) The Nashua Pride and Worcester Tornadoes clashed for two games at Historic Holman Stadium on Friday night, with Worcester taking both seven-inning affairs from the Pride, game one 3-2 and game two 6-3, in front of 1,898 fans.

In game one, Worcester trimmed the Pride, 3-2, scoring all three runs in the third inning. Josh Farkes (1-for-2, run scored) led off the inning with a double, which was followed by a Scott Grimes (0-for-2, run scored) walk. B.J. Weed (2-for-4, run scored, RBI) and Chris Colabello (1-for-3, RBI) then drove in a run each with consecutive hits, giving Worcester starter Alex Pena (2-3) all he needed to secure the win. Pena ended up going five and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs on six hits, striking out four and walking two in the game. Reliever John Birtwell came in for the final inning and a third to earn his tenth save of the season.

Pride SS Sandy Almonte roped a single to center field with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, then proceeded to steal second base and scurry to third on C Alex Trezza's throwing error, however, he was stranded their to end the game on RF Vinny Pennell's strike out. Almonte finished 1-for-3, while Bryan Duplissie was the only hitter to collect multiple hits for the home team. Starter Hideki Nagasaka (6-4) took the loss, going six and one-third innings, yielding three runs on five hits, while striking out and walking three batters apiece.

Game two saw the Tornadoes score in each of the first three innings, putting up five runs, which the Pride could not match in the game. Leading the offense for Worcester were Jeff LaHair with a home run and two RBI, Omar Pena with a double, single and an RBI, and Alex Trezza with a two run triple. Anthony Sullivan (1-0) picked up the win for the visitors, pitching two innings and only surrendering just one hit. Reliever Eddie Pena picked up his fifth save of the season, throwing a perfect sixth and seventh.

For the Pride, Argenis Tavarez and Ismael Castro each had an RBI. Starter Ryan Buckland (0-1) took the loss, going two and one-third innings, giving up five runs on four hits, walking three and striking out one along the way.

Nashua and Worcester will be back at Historic Holman Stadium tomorrow night, Saturday August 2nd at 7:05pm for the third and final game of their series. The Pride will send right-hander Lance Stevens (5-4, 4.24 ERA) to the mound, while the Tornadoes are scheduled to counter with righty Matt Weagle (8-4, 4.48 ERA).
