Surf can't generate enough offense in win
August 1, 2008 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Atlantic City Surf News Release
Brockton, Mass. - Despite two-hit evenings from RF Josh Burrus and 1B Eddie Kim, the Atlantic City Surf fell to the Brockton Rox, 8-3, in a Can-Am League contest at Campanelli Stadium on Friday evening, the first in a three-game set.
After a scoreless two and a half innings, Brockton (10-8) broke the deadlock with a four-run third, scoring on an RBI double from 2B Melvin Falu, a two-run dinger to left by DH Jason Colson, and an RBI single by 1B Francisco Lebron.
The Rox added another run in the sixth on CF Eugene Julien's sacrifice fly before Atlantic City finally broke through in the seventh, registering a run on SS Anthony Granato's RBI fielder's choice to make the score 5-1. Brockton then tacked on three more in the eighth, with Julien tripling home two runs before scoring an unearned run of his own.
The evening's last two scores came in the ninth when Granato and Burrus both doubled in runs to proffer the final 8-3 outcome.
The Rox' offensive output was more than enough for Brockton starter John Kelly (6-4). The righthander shut out the Surf through six innings of work, scattering four hits and striking out eight to earn the victory. For Atlantic City (12-6), J.C. Huguet (7-4) threw all eight innings, allowing six earned runs on ten hits while fanning seven.
Falu led the Rox' attack, going 4-for-4, while Lebron was also 2-for-4.
Despite the loss, the Surf remain one game ahead of Quebec for first place in the second-half standings, as the Capitales fell to visiting Sussex 6-1.
The two teams return to action on Saturday evening, with Atlantic City's Austin Redwine (0-1) facing Brockton's Greg Bunn (2-3) at 7:05 p.m.
