Tornadoes rally for win

WORCESTER - An Alex Trezza walk-off double capped off a four-run ninth inning to give the Worcester Tornadoes a thrilling 7-6 win over Atlantic City on Wednesday evening at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.

The victory marked the third of the walk-off variety in the second half of the season. Trailing 6-3 heading into the ninth, Josh Farkes started the rally with a walk, Scott Grimes was hit by the pitch and B.J. Weed beat out an infield single, loading the bases. Chris Colabello then drove in two with an RBI single to left which made it 6-5. Francisco Caraballo followed with a walk which set up Trezza's heroics.

Every Worcester hitter reached base while all but one finished with a hit. B.J. Weed (3-for-5) led the way with three hits while Colabello (2-for-5) and Jeroloman (2-for-4) had two apiece.

The Surf used two hits and a walk to open up a quick first-inning lead. Anthony Granato led off with a single and Clyde Williams walked. With two outs in the frame, Josh Burrus drove in Granato with an RBI single for the 1-0 advantage.

Grimes tied the score at one with a solo home run leading off the third inning. Colabello then doubled to right-center and Caraballo hit a seeing-eye single through the left side, scoring Colabello for the 2-1 lead.

Atlantic City answered with a two-spot of their own in the fourth to put Worcester back into a one-run hole. Gil Zayas produced both runs with a long ball to left, scoring Eddie Kim in front of him for the 3-2 lead.

The seesaw game continued in the bottom of the inning when Jeff LaHair crushed a solo home run to tie the game at three.

Single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings allowed the Surf to open up the 6-3 lead. Lucas Taylor led off the fifth with a single and after stealing second, scored on a Granato bloop single. William Plaza contributed with a solo home run in the sixth for the 5-3 advantage while Joe Burke doubled in Granato in the seventh for the three-run lead.

The Tornadoes conclude their series with Atlantic City on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Matt Weagle takes the hill for the Tornadoes; he will be opposed by Rory Shortell.
