Ottawa Voyageurs News Release

(OTTAWA, ON) Wednesday, August 6, 2008 - The 2,099 fans gathered at Rapidz Stadium witnessed an exciting game between the Ottawa Rapidz and the Sussex Skyhawks on Wednesday night. Sussex got the best out of the match up winning the ballgame 11-8.

Matthew Weston continued his consistent hitting in this series giving Sussex a 1-0 lead with a two-out single in the top of the first. The Rapidz tied the game during their second turn at bat on a single by Scotty McKnight. The home team made it a 2-1 game in the bottom of the third when Jabe Bergeron went deep for his ninth homerun of the season.

An error on a double base stealing attempt and a double by Weston put Sussex ahead 3-2 in the top of the fifth. Bergeron leadoff the bottom of the fifth with a single, scored on Kyle Geiger's double and came in to score when Pete Pirman added another double to take a one run lead.

The Skyhawks manufactured a run to tie the game at 4 in the top of the sixth, only to see the Rapidz answer with a three-run inning. McKnight collected his 100th professional baseball career hit, a single that produced the first run of the inning. He and Nate Hall both scored on Jose de los Santos' one-out double.

Sussex sent 11 batters and accumulated eight hits against Jose Guanchez and Angelo Burrows to score six times in the top of the seventh to take a 10-7 lead. Both team added another run, the Rapidz in the bottom of the eighth and the Skyhawks in the top of the ninth for an 11-8 final.

Burrows (1-1) had a rough outing, allowing three runs (all earned) on five hits to suffer the loss. Khalid Afify (1-0) allowed three hits and two runs (both earned) but still managed to get the win. Matt Petrusek rebounded from a bad outing the night before to collect his 15th save of the season.

Ottawa and Sussex complete their series on Thursday, August 7 at 11:05am. Adam Hawes (4-8, 5.68 ERA) will be the starter for the Rapidz and will face Craig Snipp (4-5, 3.91 ERA).
