Worcester, Mass. - C Alex Trezza's two-run, ninth-inning double, part of a four-run ninth inning, was the difference as the Worcester Tornadoes defeated the Atlantic City Surf, 7-6, in a Can-Am League affair at Fitton Field on Wednesday evening.
Atlantic City (15-8) put a run on the board in the first with RF Josh Burrus' RBI single, before Worcester (13-10) went ahead 2-1 in the third with RF Scott Grimes' leadoff homer and LF Francisco Caraballo's RBI single. The Surf quickly regained the lead in the fourth with a two-run blast by 3B Gil Zayas, before Tornadoes 2B Jeff LaHair tied the game up at three with a home run of his own in the Worcester half of the fourth.
Single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings gave Atlantic City a three-run lead that would last until the ninth. SS Anthony Granato peeled an RBI single to center in the fifth, before C William Plaza's sixth-inning solo shot, his second of the season, and an RBI double by LF Joe Burke in the seventh.
Starter Derek Barrows and relievers Derek Duclos and Walker Whitley rolled along until the ninth, when Kyle George (4-2) ran into trouble. Worcester was able to load the bases, and with one out, Chris Colabello drove a single through the left side to make it 6-5, Surf. After Caraballo walked, Trezza laced a double into right, bringing home two runs and giving the Tornadoes the 7-6 victory.
In his second start of the season, Barrows received a no-decision after giving up three runs on eight hits in five innings of work. Ryan Lobban (2-1) registered the victory for Worcester, holding Atlantic City hitless in an inning and a third.
Despite the loss, Zayas led the Surf offense by going 3-for-4 with the fourth-inning blast. Granato was also 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. For Worcester, CF BJ Weed went 3-for-5, while Colabello, Trezza and SS Chuck Jeroloman each had two hits.
In the fourth and final game of the series on Thursday night, Atlantic City's Rory Shortell (6-2) takes on the Tornadoes' Matt Weagle (6-5) at 7:05 p.m.
