Tornadoes Fall Apart In Eighth, Lose To Quebec

Quebec City, Quebec -- The Worcester Tornadoes played Quebec even for 7 innings, but the Capitales exploded for four 8th inning runs to defeat the Tornadoes, 6-2, at Le Stade Municipal tonight.

The Capitales struck first for the second straight night. Catcher Greg Stevens lined a wind-blown solo homer to left in the 2nd inning off Worcester starter Junior Guerrero to make it 1-0, Quebec. The Capitales would add another run in the inning when Luis Sabino lost a routine Goefrey Tomlinson fly ball to center in the twilight, and led 2-0 after two innings.

Once again, the Tornadoes bats were silent in hte early innings, this time against Quebec righty Karl Gelinas. But Worcester finally broke through in the 4th. A one-out Sabino double and three straight hits after two were out tied the game at 2-2. Andrew Wishy and Yohanny Valera picked up the two RBIs with consecutive singles.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the 8th inning. Guerrero went 5 strong innings and Chris Shank tossed 2 scoreless frames before righy John Birtwell (0-1) took over to start the 8th. After retiring the leadoff man, Birtwell allowed two singles before Jjallil Sandoval's bounding ball towards second was not handled by Dominic Ramos, scoring a run. After an intentional walk to Goefrey Tomlinson, Boomer Berry knocked in another run with an infield single and Mike Galloway capped the inning with a two-run double to make it 6-2 and provide the final tally.

Brian Dumesnil (1-0) was credited with the win in relief and Birtwell (0-1) took the loss. The Capitales pounded out 14 hits and now have 26 hits in the first two games of the series. Patrick Perry extended his hitting streak to 7 games dating back to last season, the longest such streak in the Can-Am League. The Tornadoes will try to salvage one game of their three-game set in Quebec on Saturday night when RHP Matt Weagle takes the hill against Quebec righty Keith Dunn. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
