Tornadoes Drop Season Opener In Quebec

Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Quebec City, Quebec -- The Quebec Capitales used two big innings to build an 8-run lead, then held off a late Tornadoes charge to defeat the Worcester Tornadoes, 9-5, at Le Stade Municipal in Quebec tonight.

The Capitales jumped on Tornadoes starter Alex Pena (0-1) for three runs in the 1st inning. Four consecutive 1-out hits, capped off by RBI doubles by Eddie Lantigua and Ryan Lehr, did the damage. Pena settled down to pitch three scoreless frames, but the Tornadoes could manage only one hit through the first four innings against Quebec RHP Jorge Perez (1-0).

Worcester finally pushed across their first run in the 5th on a leadoff double by Patrick Perry and a one-out RBI single by Dominic Ramos, but the Capitales responded with an unearned run off Mike Meagher in the 5th, and then blew things open with a five-run 6th. Quebec sent 10 batters to the plate in the 6th, and Meagher was charged with 6 runs (only 2 earned due to two throwing errors by 3B Euvi Solano).

The Tornadoes bats finally awakened in the 9th, as they started the inning with 5 straight hits off RHP Michel Simard (RBI singles for Perry and Ramos and an RBI double for Jeff LaHair), but the 4 9th inning runs were too little too late. Perez was credited with the win and Pena took the loss.

Solano made an outstand diving catch in foul territory of a Boomer Berry soft liner in the 2nd that turned into a rare 5-1 double play when Scotty Martin was thrown out at the plate trying to tag up on the play. The Tornadoes nearly turned an around-the-horn triple play in the 4th inning, but Ramos`relay to first was just a hair late to get Martin. The Torandoes will try even up the three-game series at one victory apiece on Friday night when they send RHP Junior Guerrero to the mound against Quebec righty Karl Gelinas. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
