American Defenders of New Hampshire News Release
(NASHUA, NH, May 25, 2007) Bryan Duplissie's fielder's choice grounder in the ninth inning scored Jose Velazquez with the game-winning run as the Nashua Pride (1-1) won for the first time in the 2007 season, a 3-2 victory Friday night over the North Shore Spirit (1-1) in front of 1,767 fans at Historic Holman Stadium.
Velazquez drew a one-out walk in the ninth off North Shore losing pitching Derek Drage (0-1) and then advanced to third on a single to right field by Matt Creighton. With runners on the corners and one out, Duplissie chopped a ground ball to the left side of the infield. North Shore third baseman Mike Torres made a wide throw to second base in an effort to get Creighton but the throw pulled Spirit second baseman Ricardo Cordova off the bag allowing Velazquez to cross the plate with the game-winning tally.
It was a great Nashua debut for starting pitcher Akira Okamoto who worked the first five innings for the Pride, allowing four hits, walking no one and striking out nine. Nashua reliever Steve Palazzolo (1-0), the fourth Pride pitcher of the night, earned the win by throwing a hitless ninth inning.
The Pride and the Spirit resume their four-game series at Historic Holman Stadium on Saturday night at 7:05. Both teams will send lefthanders to the mouth with Tom Thornton pitching for Nashua and Joey Siak for the Spirit.
A spectacular Atlas fireworks display will follow the game and the Pride will host a special Parrot Head Tribute to Jimmy Buffet with fans receiving tropical cups to commemorate the event. All Nashua Pride games this season are on the Internet at www.nashuapride.com and www.canamleague.com.
