New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - The New Jersey Jackals hammered the Sussex bullpen on Friday evening, in a 14-4 romp of the Skyhawks at Skylands Park.
A pair of RBI singles by Rob Gandolfo and B.J. Richmond gave the Skyhawks an early 2-0 lead for the second night in a row. But the Jackals would make up the deficit rather quickly. In the top half of the second, Skyhawks starter Tim Tisch struggled with control and he walked three Jackals leading to two runs. He walked Zack Smithlin with the bases loaded for the first run, and Sandy Madera collected an RBI single for the second.
Two innings later, the Jackals inched in front of Sussex. With the bases loaded and no one out, Smithlin's RBI sac fly scored Joe Mihalics to make the score 3-2.
In the fifth, New Jersey's offense posted three more runs to extend their lead to 6-2. Mihalics reached on an error that allowed two runs to cross the plate. Clay Kuklick then scored when Tim Turner reached on a fielder's choice.
The game was put out of reach in the seventh when the Jackals exploded for eight more runs, while sending 14 batters to the plate. In the inning, Francisco Leandro, Alex Frazier, Jud Thigpen, Mihalics, Turner and Smithlin all collected RBI. After the outpouring of runs, the Jackals led 14-2.
In the bottom half of the inning, Sussex got to within 10 runs on Jason Alcott's first career homerun, which was a two run blast.
Ben Thurmond was awarded the win in six stellar innings of work. He allowed just the two earned runs in the first inning on six total hits. He walked none and struck out four. The loss went to Sussex starter Tim Tisch. The lefty surrendered three runs, two of them earned, on six hits in three plus innings. He struggled with control as he walked four batters and tossed 79 pitches, only 42 of them strikes.
Every Jackal starter reached base in the ballgame, including 10 walks issued by the Sussex pitching staff. The Jackals are now 13-3 all-time against their intra-state rivals, including five wins by double digit runs.
