Sussex Skyhawks News Release
The Sussex Skyhawks followed up a brilliant pitching performance by Ryan Dittfurth on Thursday night with a below average pitching performance by a several pitchers Friday night. The Skyhawks took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but their bats would soon be silenced. On the opposing side, the New Jersey Jackals scored early and often as they racked up 14 runs over 9 innings.
The Skyhawks scored 2 runs in the bottom of the first inning off the bats of Rob Gandolfo and BJ Richmond. Jackal starting pitcher, Ben Thurmond, struggled to find the strike zone early in the first inning, but settled down to finish with 6 innings pitched, allowing 2 earned runs on 6 hits while striking out 4. Tim Sabo replaced Thurmond in the 7th inning who let up 2 runs off the bat of Jason Alcott's first home run as a Skyhawk. The Skyhawks bats were silenced after the 7th inning, as they could not spark a rally.
The Jackals responded immediately scoring 2 runs in the top of the 2nd inning off the bats of Zach Smithlin and Sandy Madera. The Jackals would tack on 1 run in the forth, 3 runs in the 5th and 8 runs in the 7th inning to bust the game wide. Tim Sabo replaced Thurmond in the 7th inning and let up 2 runs off the bat of Jason Alcott's first home run as a Skyhawk. The Skyhawks bats were silenced after the 7th inning, as they could not spark a rally. The Jackals sent the Skyhawks to a 0-2 start in the early goings of the 2007 season.
The Jackals finished the game scoring 14 runs on 17 hits while committing 0 errors. The Skyhawks scored 4 runs on 8 hits while committing 4 errors on the night.
Zach Smithlin led the Jackals going 3-5 with 3 RBI's and 1 Run. Ron Perodin went 4-5 with a run scored and Jason Alcott hit a pinch hit 2 run home run, his first as a Skyhawk, for the Sussex Skyhawks.
Ben Thurmond recorded his first win of the season for the Jackals while Tim Tisch picked up his first loss of the season for the Skyhawks. The Skyhawk bullpen let up 11 Runs, 4 earned runs, on 11 hits while walking 6.
The Skyhawks hope to turn it around tomorrow in game 3 of a 4 game series with the Jackals at 5:05 pm at Skylands Park. Edisbel Benitez will get the start for the Skyhawks tomorrow against right-handed pitcher Aaron Lopper.
