Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
DES MOINES, Iowa - Tim Federowicz hit a grand slam and Nick Buss hit a pair of home runs as the Albuquerque Isotopes defeated the Iowa Cubs, 15-5, on cold windy Friday night at Principal Park.
At first pitch, it was 39 degrees at first pitch and the wind was 19 mph. The wind played a major factor in the game, knocking down potential home runs and blowing foul balls into fair territory.
Federowicz, in his first game with the Topes after getting optioned to Albuquerque by the Dodgers earlier in the week, reached base on all six times. He singled twice, walked twice, was hit by a pitch, and his grand slam was the big blow in a five-run fifth inning.
The Topes scored five more runs in the sixth inning. Matt Angle hit his first home run of the season, while Buss hit a two-run shot. Buss capped a five-RBI game with a three-run blast in the ninth inning.
Scott Van Slyke continued a torrid start to the season with two more hits, two more walks, two more RBIs and three more runs scored. He's driven in 16 runs in nine games. He's 18-for-32 (.563) this year and has reached base 28 times in 40 plate appearances.
Starting pitcher Blake Johnson (1-0) became the first Topes starting pitcher to get a victory this season. He allowed three runs in five innings. Shawn Smith, the former New Mexico Lobo, pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh inning, before giving up two runs in the eighth. Chris Withrow recorded the final four outs, all on strikeouts.
The Topes (6-3) have won all five meetings against the I-Cubs this season. The four-game series continues Saturday with Javy Guerra making his second start of the season. The game starts at 6:05 Mountain Time.
